What is a Special Master?

A special master is a court-appointed official who helps the court carry out specific tasks in a case. In Georgia, a special master must be a competent attorney at law, be of good standing in his or her profession, and have at least three years’ experience in the practice of law.

The purpose of a special master is to conserve judicial resources by streamlining a particular issue, such as discovery, in difficult or intensive cases. Sometimes a special master is selected because of they are a subject matter expert in one of the issues of the case.

The success of a special master is based on their demonstrable negotiation skills. When seeking an attorney for appointment as a special master in your case, it is important that the attorney selected have proven success as an arbiter, mediator, facilitator, and negotiator.
